Reporting to the Executive Director, the Finance Director is an integral part of the senior leadership team and participates in the financial and functional decision-making processes necessary for the successful attainment of KANDUs strategic, operational, and financial goals.
KANDU's Finance Director must possess the skills, knowledge, and judgment to successfully steward KANDU's multi-million-dollar financial programs. Excellent problem-solving skills, creativity, and agility will be necessary to navigate the unique fiscal and regulatory challenges faced by today's nonprofit organizations. Likewise, personal qualities, such as humility, kindness, warmth, and empathy are of paramount importance.RESPONSIBILITIESThe Finance Director has responsibility for monitoring the overall financial performance of the agency as well as being accountable for all aspects of its day-to-day financial management.Working directly with the Executive Director, the senior leadership team, and the Board of Directors the Finance Directors role is to support informed strategic decision-making and advance KANDU's financial objectives.
As the department head, the Finance Director is responsible for budgeting, general accounting, cash management, auditing, insurance, and IT related to enterprise resources planning systems. The Finance Director oversees the development and maintenance of these information systems, directing/coordinating all design, implementation, and modification to meet agency objectives and timelines.
The position is also responsible for the development of financial policies and internal controls and ensuring their implementation.Job Duties & Objectives
1. Financial Leadershipa)Oversees and manages the short and long-term financial affairs of the organization and evaluates opportunities to ensure steady growth and the financial strength of the organization.b)Prepares and presents budgets, forecasts, and financial reports in partnership with the senior leadership team, to the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.c)Ensures the implementation of financial control policies and procedures and provides for ongoing compliance.d)Works as a partner with the senior leadership team and ensures that there is an open line of communication and positive interaction with all staff.e)Routinely reviews financial statements, operation reports, and key operating metrics with the senior leadership team and managers, offering recommendations to drive operational performance.f)Consults with and advises the executive director and the senior leadership team on problems/issues relating to the operation of the agency, particularly with respect to financial activities.g)Provides ongoing analysis of variances from the budget and assists the senior leadership team in implementing changes needed to achieve budget goals.2.Data Integrity and Policy Compliancea)Monitors operating metrics (including sales, supportive employment and client hours worked, and staff hours) daily to ensure accuracy and timeliness of data flowing to the senior leadership team.b)Ensures the quality of financial information by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures for data collection.c)Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing financial control policies and procedures and providing for ongoing compliance.d)Complies with all applicable laws, statutes, rules, regulations, generally accepted accounting principles, and best practices.3.Financial and Management Reporting a)Develops and maintains a weekly dashboard of expense, revenue, and operating metrics with the senior leadership team.b)Outlines the agencys financial performance relative to budget through monthly financial reports for the senior leadership team and the board of directors.c)Ensures the implementation of financial control policies and procedures and provides for ongoing compliance.d)Attends meetings of the Board of Directors to clarify budget and financial reports.4.Information Systemsa)Designs and implements effective financial and performance information systems to identify, forecast, measure, report, and influence all financial and key operating factors within KANDU.b)Leads the development of comprehensive financial control systems to support service units and serves as an executive leader in their implementation.c)Implements and enforces systems, policies, and procedures of the organization supporting and improving the overall operation and effectiveness of the agency.5.Financial Planninga)Participates in the ongoing strategic planning process which serves as a basis for the budget and produces the necessary financial analysis and forecasts.b)Prepares annual operating budget with the senior leadership team and department managers for board approval.c)Provides financial expertise in planning new services including preparation of Pro-forma operational/financial plans.d)Prepares annual capital budgets and monitors capital requests for compliance.6.Risk Management/Benefits Analysisa)Secures and administers all necessary liability, director and officer insurance, workers compensation, and errors and omissions insurance for the agency.b)Partners with HR to design workforce development plans that integrate with business strategies.a)Aids in the selection of and budgeting for employee benefit agreements and insurance lines in coordination with Human Resources and applicable members of the senior leadership team.7.Finance Department Leadershipb)Supervises and coordinates activities of the Finance staff working in the general ledger, treasury, billing and collection, financial statements, reports, budgets, and managerial accounting.c)Assures monthly financial analysis/close is conducted within the accounting standards of the agency.d)Establishes department goals that are consistent with the goals and mission of the agency.e)Develops a working schedule that provides consistency in coverage and potential for future recruitment.f)Hires, trains, and appraises staff effectively, taking appropriate action on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy.g)Promotes a team environment by example and by participating in workload completion when necessary.h)Assists employees in professional growth.8.Professional Conduct a) Communicate with all individuals in a positive and professional A CPA or other relevant qualification is a plus. Above and beyond that, our ideal Finance Director will also have the following qualifications:Non-profit financial management experience, preferably a minimum of seven to ten years, at a medium to a large-sized organization operating multiple businesses with different economic models.
Experience in developing and implementing successful business strategies, with a comprehensive understanding of finance and performance management principles, including familiarity with financial models and forecasts.
Extensive experience in design and oversight of operations, policies, and procedures relating to internal control systems, accounting and reporting systems, annual audit, and general financial reporting systems.
Knowledge of electronic data processing systems, proficiency in MS Dynamics GP and Office, and familiarity with basic IT applications.
Previous experience as a member of a leadership team and manager of an administrative team.
Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
Ability to think strategically and solve problems.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within senior leadership team as well as service unit managers, board members, audit firms, and other outside consultants.
Ability to lead with a high degree of emotional intelligence and ethics.
